Orthodontic Instrument Supply for Dental Groups

Written & reviewed by the Equate Technical Team · Updated

Dental groups standardise orthodontic instrument trays so every site uses the same sets, reprocessing instructions and reorder codes. That cuts tray variation, simplifies training and makes loss and wear visible. Equate supplies ISO 13485-manufactured instruments directly on a quote basis, and offers OEM and private-label manufacturing for groups that want their own tray specification.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Define the archwire change tray

Fix the ligature cutter, Weingart, distal end cutter and tucker as one cassette.

  2. 2

    Define the debond tray

Standardise the debonding and band removing pliers, and count them at each cycle.

  3. 3

Use a starter kit for new sites

A fixed kit shortens the setup of a new orthodontic site.

    Add aligner capability

Aligner pliers can be added as a single kit to general sites.

The problem is variation, not price alone

A group with twelve clinics can easily have twelve versions of an orthodontic tray: different plier makers, different cutter inserts, different cassette contents. The cost shows up elsewhere: staff relearn trays when they rotate between sites, sterile services cannot predict what comes back, and a complaint about a cutter that crushes wire cannot be traced to a batch or a product code.

Standardising starts with a tray specification: a list of instrument types, quantities and product codes per cassette, which each clinic then reorders unchanged.

Sterilisation and documentation

Group sterile services need consistent reprocessing instructions. ISO 17664-1:2021 specifies the information a manufacturer must provide for processing critical and semi-critical devices, covering point-of-use treatment, cleaning, disinfection, drying, inspection, maintenance, packaging, sterilisation and storage; it does not itself dictate the method. Ask any supplier for these instructions per product, and keep them with the tray record.

Under the 2003 CDC dental guidelines heat-tolerant semicritical items are heat sterilised between patients. Small studies on orthodontic pliers have found corrosion differences by brand and routine, so groups can reduce risk by specifying one reprocessing routine and one supplier whose instructions it matches.

Regulatory basics for a multi-site buyer

  • ISO 13485:2016 is the quality management standard for medical device manufacturers. Equate manufactures under an ISO 13485 system and publishes certifications on the Certifications page.
  • Under EU Regulation 2017/745 (MDR), reusable surgical instruments are class Ir, and a notified body assesses the aspects relating to reuse such as cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation, as described in a dental-perspective review in Frontiers in Dental Medicine.
  • Ask suppliers for the declaration of conformity and the reprocessing instructions per product code, and check requirements in each country you operate in.

Procurement: direct quotes and private label

Equate sells directly to clinics and groups on a quote basis. Groups can discuss a framework quote covering tray specifications and reorders. For groups that want branded instruments or their own tray specification, Equate offers OEM and private-label manufacturing; ask on the manufacturers page.

For indication only, a typical Equate list price for Weingart pliers is about EUR 64.90 ex-VAT, around 52% below the EUR 134.80 median premium European RRP. Final group pricing is quoted.

Reorder consistency

Reorder consistency means the same product code, same specification and same manufacturing standard each time. Write the codes into the tray specification, put the product code on the cassette record and review instrument condition at set intervals so worn instruments are replaced at the same time across sites. Start with a pilot tray at two or three sites before a group-wide roll-out.

The Equate difference

Equate's orthodontic range spans 396 references, including 2 starter orthodontic kits and 14 band removing plier references, which lets a group specify standard trays from one catalogue while keeping a single supplier file.

Frequently asked questions

How can a dental group standardise orthodontic trays?

Write a tray specification by appointment type with product codes and quantities, pilot it at a few sites, and reorder from it unchanged.

What is ISO 17664-1 and why does it matter for DSOs?

It specifies what information manufacturers provide for processing critical and semi-critical devices, such as cleaning and sterilisation steps. It allows one documented reprocessing routine across sites.

Does Equate offer private label orthodontic instruments?

Equate offers OEM and private-label manufacturing for partners; enquire through the manufacturers page and the contact page.

How do groups buy Equate instruments?

Equate sells directly on a quote basis; groups can ask about framework quotes through the contact page.

Are reusable orthodontic pliers regulated under the EU MDR?

Reusable surgical instruments are class Ir, with notified body involvement for reuse aspects such as cleaning and sterilisation, per a dental-perspective MDR review. Check current rules for your country.

How many spare instruments should each site hold?

It depends on cycle time and chair numbers. Most groups hold at least one spare of each high-use plier and cutter per chair.
